The short answer

San Blas (Guna Yala) is about 4 to 5 hours door to door from Panama City: roughly 2.5 to 3.5 hours by 4x4 over the mountains to the port of Cartí, then 20 to 45 minutes by boat to the islands. Pick-up is usually between 5:00 and 6:00 a.m. You need your original passport and cash for the entry fee. There is no road to the islands themselves, and ordinary rental cars are not allowed on the last stretch of road.

Option 1: 4x4 and boat (how most people go)

This is how the large majority of visitors travel, and it is the route our own trips use. The road from the Pan-American Highway at El Llano climbs over the forested mountains of the continental divide and drops down to the Caribbean coast. It is steep and winding, and the Guna authorities only allow authorised 4x4 vehicles on it. That is why you travel with a transport operator rather than driving yourself.

A real stop on our route: the 4x4s take you over the mountains to the port.

Shared 4x4 transfers usually cost around US$25–40 per person each way, and private transfers cost more. On a full-day tour the transport is normally included, so check what your price covers before comparing.

The trip, step by step

  1. 5:00–6:00 a.m. – Pick-up at your hotel or apartment in Panama City. Have breakfast ready or ask your driver about a quick stop.
  2. Road to El Llano. About an hour east along the highway. This is your last easy chance for an ATM and a proper bathroom.
  3. Mountain road and checkpoint. At the entrance to the Guna Yala territory a checkpoint reviews passports and collects the entry fee.
  4. Arrival at Cartí port. You leave the 4x4 and board a lancha, an open motorboat with a roof or sunshade.
  5. 20–45 minutes by boat to the first island, depending on the island and the sea. Farther areas like the Cayos Holandeses take 1.5 to 2.5 hours.
  6. Return. Day trips usually leave the islands mid-afternoon to reach the city in the early evening.

The last leg is by lancha from Cartí. Sit near the back if you prefer a smoother ride.

Local tip: the sea is usually calmer in the morning. If you get seasick, take your tablet before boarding at Cartí, not on the boat.

Option 2: flying to San Blas

Air Panama flies small planes from Albrook airport in Panama City to airstrips inside the territory, such as El Porvenir. The flight takes about half an hour. It saves the road trip, but seats are limited, luggage allowances are strict (around 14 kg per person on small aircraft) and you still need a boat from the airstrip to your island. Check current schedules and fares directly with the airline. Flying makes most sense for stays of two nights or more.

Option 3: sailing from Colombia

Many backpackers cross between Cartagena (Colombia) and Panama on a sailboat or speedboat trip that spends several days in San Blas. It is a beautiful way to arrive, but it is a border crossing: you need a passport valid for at least six months and you go through immigration on arrival. If you only want to visit San Blas from Panama City, the 4x4 route is far simpler.

Entry fee, passport and checkpoint

San Blas is the Comarca Guna Yala, an autonomous indigenous territory governed by the Guna General Congress. Every visitor pays an entry fee set by the Guna authorities. At the time of writing it is US$22 for foreign visitors and US$7 for Panamanian residents, paid in cash. Some travel sources quote slightly different amounts (US$20–23), because the fee is revised from time to time. Bring small bills.

What to bring on the day

Mistakes to avoid

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to get from Panama City to San Blas?

About 4 to 5 hours door to door: 2.5 to 3.5 hours by 4x4 to the port of Cartí and 20 to 45 minutes by boat to the islands. A flight to El Porvenir takes about 30 minutes, plus the boat to your island.

Can I drive to San Blas myself?

Not with an ordinary rental car. The last part of the road is controlled by the Guna authorities and only authorised 4x4 vehicles may use it, so most visitors travel with a transport operator or a tour.

Do I need a passport to visit San Blas?

Yes. Foreign visitors should carry their original passport for the checkpoint at the entrance to Guna Yala. Copies are often not accepted. Panamanian residents can use their ID.

How much is the San Blas entry fee?

At the time of writing it is US$22 for foreign visitors and US$7 for Panamanian residents, paid in cash. The Guna authorities revise it from time to time, so carry a little extra.

Is a San Blas day trip worth it?

Yes, if you want a taste of the islands and have only one free day: you get several hours of island time, swimming and snorkelling. If you can, one night on an island lets you enjoy it without the early start and long return in one day.

Are there ATMs in San Blas?

No. Bring all the cash you need in US dollars from Panama City or the last stop at El Llano.
