The short answer

The best time to visit San Blas is the dry season, from mid-December to April. February to April are usually the driest months on Panama's Caribbean coast, with the clearest water for snorkelling. January to March is also peak season, so book early. The rainy season runs from May to November; it rarely rains all day, prices and crowds drop, and October and November are usually the wettest months.

San Blas is warm all year, around 27–31 °C (81–88 °F), so "best" is really about rain, sea conditions and crowds, not temperature.

Dry season vs. rainy season

Dry season (mid-Dec – April)Rainy season (May – Nov)
WeatherMostly sunny, steady trade windsSunny mornings, showers or storms later in the day
SeaClear water; wind can make the boat ride bumpyOften calmer winds, but rain can cloud the water
CrowdsBusiest, especially Jan–Mar and holidaysQuieter islands
PricesHighest; book aheadOften 15–20% lower

Good to know: the Caribbean coast can get a shower at any time of year, even in the dry season. It usually passes quickly. Bring a light rain jacket and a dry bag either way.

San Blas month by month

December

The rains taper off and the dry season begins in the second half of the month. Christmas and New Year are among the busiest weeks of the year, so book well ahead.

January

Dry, sunny and lively. Steady winds make it great for sailing; the boat ride from Cartí can be choppy on windy days. Peak season.

February

One of the best months: dry, clear water and long sunny days. Carnival week is busy all over Panama.

March

Still dry and very good for snorkelling. Easter (Holy Week) brings many Panamanian visitors when it falls in March or April.

April

Usually dry, and the second half of the month gets quieter after Easter. A great balance of weather and space.

May

The rainy season starts. Many days are still sunny in the morning; expect afternoon showers. Prices start to drop.

June – September

Rainy season, with a mix of sun and storms. Many travellers still have excellent days. Seas can be rough on some days, so stay flexible and listen to your captain.

October – November

Usually the wettest months. Fewer visitors and lower prices; good for travellers who don't mind some rain and want a quieter experience.

Busy dates to plan around

San Blas is popular with Panamanians on long weekends. Expect more people, and book earlier, around Christmas and New Year, Carnival (February or March), Holy Week (March or April) and Panama's national holidays in November.

The Guna people also hold their own celebrations and community events during the year. On those days some islands may close to visitors. Your operator will know.

Visiting in the rainy season

A rainy-season trip can be wonderful. Rain usually comes in short, heavy bursts, often in the afternoon, and the islands are quieter. To make the most of it:
